Acting on climate change

Climate change is one of the biggest threats to our society, and to the future of our business. We are accelerating our climate change efforts by announcing that we will achieve zero net emissions by 2050. By doing so, Nestlé is embracing the most ambitious aim of the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

With this announcement, we are building on a decade of work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligned over the last four years with science-based targets to keep the temperature increase below 2C.

Making an impact on this issue means we can support the livelihoods of the farmers who supply us for years into the future, while ensuring a healthy planet for us all.

For our business

Stabilizing emissions will allow us to manage the many risk factors that climate change brings to our value chain, from sourcing raw materials in drought-affected regions to dealing with the problems of deforestation.

Our approach

As a major global company, it is right for us to demonstrate leadership on this critical issue. Over the next two years, we will lay out a time-bound plan with interim targets consistent with the 1.5C path, and review our progress annually to ensure we are on track.

To achieve its 2050 ambition, some of Nestlé’s specific actions include:

  • Speeding-up the transformation of its products in line with consumer trends and choices. We will launch more products that have a better environmental footprint and contribute to a balanced diet, including more plant-based food and beverage options. Nestlé will also reformulate its products using more climate-friendly ingredients, and it is moving to alternative packaging materials.
  • Scaling up initiatives in agriculture to absorb more carbon. By strengthening programs with farmers to restore land and limit greenhouse gas emissions. This includes improved management of its dairy supply chain. Nestlé will step up efforts to protect forests by replanting trees and enhancing biodiversity. All to help build resilient agricultural communities.
  • Using 100% renewable electricity in our factories, warehouses, logistics and offices. A third of Nestlé factories (143) are already using 100% renewable electricity. Nestlé will continue to increase the use of energy from renewable sources, enabling suppliers to invest in new infrastructure such as wind and solar farms.

Limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires transformational change across industries, governments and society as a whole. Nestlé will continue its advocacy for government policies to ensure all sectors move faster towards 1.5°C. Supportive legislation could help to reduce barriers to expanding renewable energy markets, incentivize innovation in agriculture and forestry to capture more carbon, and help to establish carbon pricing.

Why it matters

Changes in weather, temperature and water availability are already affecting farmers who supply Nestlé. Following the IPCC report released in October 2018, there is now a sense of increased urgency to the calls for land management interventions to deliver GHG emission reductions on a global scale, and for companies to build resilience into their value chains.

Our contribution

Our approach to tackling the environmental challenges associated with climate change involves reducing our operational GHG emissions across our value chain in line with science-based targets. We’re also helping our suppliers adapt to a changing climate by distributing drought-resistant coffee and cocoa plantlets.

Our efforts to act on climate change areas earned a score of 100/100 in the Climate Strategy section of the 2018 Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and we ranked first in the Environmental dimension overall. We were also one of only 59 companies included in the CDP’s supplier engagement leader board (see the Global Supply Chain report), and retained our place in CDP’s Climate A list.
