Offering portion guidance

Across our markets and our categories, we aim to make eating and drinking the right amount for a healthy, balanced diet as easy and intuitive as possible.

Our commitment

Offer guidance on portions for our products

Why it matters

Around the world, expanding portion sizes are contributing to imbalanced eating habits, and leading to adverse health outcomes. Conversely, smaller portions of vegetables, whole grains and milk cannot deliver the required levels of daily nutrition. As the largest global food manufacturer, we have a unique opportunity to help guide individuals and families to pursue a healthy diet through informed choices and our?Nestlé Portion Guidance? initiative.

Our approach

We’re helping people understand portion sizes in different ways. Through on-pack information, initiatives and programs, we’re raising awareness about portion guidance.

What we are doing

We are helping people understand the nutritional value of our foods and beverages through information on portion guidance.

By 2020

Continue providing guidance on portions globally on all children’s and family product packs, and add frequency of consumption indications on relevant products.

Our result: 65.4% of our children’s and family product packs provide Nestlé Portion Guidance.

By 2020

Extend our guidance on portions to our consumer recipes, and relevant teenager and adult products.

Our result: We work with dietitians in the US to help them better engage with their communities on portion guidance and consumer recipes.

The figures related to extending our guidance on portions relevant to teenager and adult products will be reported by 2020.

By 2020

Gradually increase the proportion of guidance on portions provided through product form, pack design, serving device or dispenser to make it even more intuitive than on-pack messaging.

Our result: 12.2% of our children’s and family portfolio provide Nestlé Portion Guidance through product form and 12.6% do so through pack design.

Using our products to make a difference

We want to encourage consumers to adopt smaller portion sizes. Using dietary recommendations from around the world, our Nestlé Portion Guidance initiative helps individuals and families understand the nutritional value of our foods and beverages and redefine their portion habits.

The Nestlé Portion Guidance initiative is informed by a comprehensive process involving more than seven years of reviews and consultations about recommended portions/servings. Through this unique initiative, we encourage age-appropriate portion sizes on our products and packs, which helps equip consumers when they plan, buy, prepare and serve products.

In 2018, we developed guidelines to help markets accelerate the use of the initiative. This will enable us to share positive stories from its success in our 2019 report.

Sharing portion guidance advice

Our recipe websites share this guidance with home cooks and people seeking more detailed information – such as Nestlé France’s Croquons La Vie website, which, using colorful visuals, helps consumers to compose balanced meals with recipes and portion sizes adapted to their needs.

We also produce videos to share portion guidance information in an accessible, easy-to-understand way.
